Rockzone.com Gizmodgery Review
Just when you thought there was nothing new under the sun, Self comes at you with their newest release, Gizmodgery. This is an album done completely on toys and other items purchased at Toys R Us. When I first heard the idea of an album done completely with toy instruments, I was expecting people playing with a piano and a speak and spell. This assumption was quickly disproved when I started the album. The sound is something reminicent of a Beck album. The sound is a good mix of old style funk with a dose of new age pop.
The album is almost completely done by Self frontman Matt Mahaffey. Matt is the vision behind most of Self's other albums. He is a talented musician with an impressive background. One listen to this album will illustrate the musical genius this man possesses.
The album begins with "I Am A Little Explosion". This track start with some circusy sounding music with a doll voice saying "Let's play some music". From this point on the music never stops. It's a tight blend of strong "drumming", great basslines, and the never ending whimsical sounds of toys and voice boxes. The catchiest song on the album is "Trunk Fulla Amps" which is featured twice on the album, once all the way, and once edited. The song has some great grooves and the lyrics are hilarious. Another great track is the remake of the Doobie Brothers' "What A Fool Believes ". This song is done perfectly. It sounds very true to the original and is done completely with toys. Very impressive.
This album is a great view into what a band or musician can do with an active imagination. The songs are humorous and elaborate. The list of toys used on the album is impressive. You will find the list inside the booklet of the CD. This album was released by Spongebath Records, who I urge you to buy this album from. It's available on most CD retail sites, but the best price is from the label. Support indie music!!! Buy from the source. This is a bargain at any price.
